Holland America Line is creating an unforgettable event for astronomy buffs and cruise lovers with its exciting programming for the 2024 Solar Eclipse Cruise. Lucky passengers who choose to embark on the Koningsdam and Zaandam in spring 2024 to witness the total eclipse will enjoy exclusive access to lectures, demonstrations and hands-on tips from expert astronomers, making for an unforgettable experience!
Renowned Professor Adam Burgasser of the University of California, San Diego, will be guiding the experience on the Koningsdam as the ship sails off the coast of Mexico, right in the narrow “path of totality” of the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. Burgasser is a leading expert in astronomy and astrophysics, as well as the principal investigator of the university’s prestigious “Cool Star Lab.”
“We are placing our ships in the perfect location for our guests to enjoy the eclipse,” enthused Bill Prince, Holland America Line’s vice president of entertainment. “For many, this will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so having the guidance of a renowned physicist like Dr. Burgasser is an exciting opportunity for our guests. We are famous for creating immersive programs, and this live event will be unforgettable!”
Prior to the eclipse, Burgasser will give engaging talks to guests on the ship’s stunning World Stage and help them create their own eclipse viewers. During the event, he will teach them how to safely observe and understand this rare phenomenon from unique locations on the ship.
“This first total solar eclipse in North America in seven years excites amateur and professional astronomers alike, and there is no better or more unique place to observe it than on the high seas off the coast of Mexico,” Burgasser enthused. “I look forward to joining Holland America Line guests aboard the Koningsdam to witness this phenomenon and help them better understand the science and history behind it.”
Exciting Itineraries for the Solar Eclipse Cruise
The Koningsdam will depart March 23 on a spectacular 22-day Solar Eclipse Cruise. The ship will be positioned along the coast of Mexico for a total view before crossing the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii. The exciting route will begin in San Diego, California, and end in Vancouver, Canada. The cruise will depart on April 5 and head south to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, then enjoy an exciting day at sea on April 8 to witness the eclipse. The Koningsdam will then stop in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, before continuing on to Hawaii.
On the other hand, the Zaandam will depart on March 30 on a fascinating 14-day Solar Eclipse cruise, sailing to and returning from San Diego. The ship will be perfectly positioned to observe the eclipse while cruising through Mexico.
